• Lobelia - Trailing Fountain - White

Product Description

Lobelia Trailing Fountain White has a vigorous cascading habit with a profusion of flowers.

The dainty looking flowers of the annual trailing lobelia are used to great effect in summer hanging basket and container displays. They can look fabulous as a statement display on their own but are usually planted as fillers as a foil for other larger bedding plants.

For a 12" or 14" hanging basket 3-5 plants should be sufficient when used with other plants.

Available either as garden ready plants in 9cm pots or as plug plants which you can grow on with cold weather protection, then plant out once the danger of frost has passed.

** Please note due to natural variation occasionally a very small number of these could flower with some blue in the plant. **

Growing Advice

Plug Plants

Using a good quality compost, pot up your plugs into larger cells or pots as and when roots start to show through the bottom of their current container. Once your plug plants have been potted on and labelled, water them in well and grow on for around 5-6 weeks.  Water once the compost starts to dry out.

Keep plants frost free until mid/late May and then harden off before being placed in their final positions when the risk of frost has passed.

Once ready to plant outside, space at approx. 4-6" (10-15cm) apart in moist soil if planting into a container.

Hanging Baskets / Containers

If preferred you can pot on the plugs into hanging baskets, flower bags or pots. Add a slow release plant food like Miracle-Gro Slow Release All Purpose Plant Food  to your compost which will give extra nutrients for strong and healthy plant growth.

Water as necessary giving a liquid feed as instructed throughout the growing season.

Hanging baskets are generally placed in a sunny position but if you can give them some afternoon shade especially in prolonged hot weather, this will keep the basket from becoming too dry and the plants from scorching. Daily watering and a weekly high potash feed is recommended to keep basket flowers blooming throughout the summer months.

General

Trailing lobelias have shallow roots, so watering is essential to stop them drying out. Once they are depleted of moisture, lobelia will wilt and quickly dry out. Stems and flowers will brown. If this happens mid-season it is worth cutting back and seeing if the plant will revive.

End of Season

At the end of the season lobelia can be removed and placed on the compost heap to rot down and produce compost for the following season.
