Not only does it save the plastic in your wallet as they're considerably cheaper but also you can do your bit for the environment as we don't pot these plants up into pots, saving on any potention plastic waste.

So What is a Bare Root plant?

All our Bare Root strawberry plants have been raised outside in the ground and are lifted to order ready for you to plant straight out into your own garden, containers or plot.  

As these plants have been raised outside they are fully hardy so no need to worry whether they will survive frosts.  

Our bare root plants are "live" plants in that they are not lifted in advanced and dried like the bare root plants you can buy in stores, therefore as long as you plant them out within a couple of days, they should continue to grow and fruit the same year.  If you're not ready to plant out immediately just keep them in a platic bag in a cool dark place (shed or garage are perfect) and mist spray with water every few days, they'll stay alive for several weeks.

Which is best - bare root or potted?

Both have their merits, which one suits you depends on your situation. 

Potted Plants

Potted plants are perfect if you are buying in smaller quantities (1-20) or are buying now ready to plant out at a later date, as the roots won't dry out in their pots as long as you water regularly (once a month in winter, once a week in spring/autumn, check daily in summer).  If keeping in pots for longer than a month during the growing season, add some nutrients to the water to ensure the plants are well fed.

Potted strawberry plants tend to be one year old runners which may give a smaller yield in the first year as the plant matures but will give you three or more years of good harvest thereafter.

Bare Root Plants

Bare root plants on the other hand are perfect for when you are buying in larger quatities for a new strawberry bed or allotment and / or where you plan to plant out the strawberry plants within a day or so (longer during the winter dormant period).

These plants are a good mix of one year old runners and mature plants which will give you a good mix of instant yield plants along with younger plants which will mature and give you good yields for the following three or more years.

Will Strawberry Plants fruit year after year?

Strawberry plants are a fully hardy perennial plant, which means that they'll survive frosts across most of the UK (certainly what we get here in Northamptonshire) and live for many years.

Amongst growers and allotmenteers it is generally considered good practice to remove strawberry plants older than 3-4 years as beyond this a plant "may" not fruit with the same abundance as it does in years 2-3 which are it's best years.  This isn't to say that they won't fruit after this period, just that when space is a premium growers like to maximise the yield they get from every sq. metre.
